Vaginal yeast infections occur due to an overgrowth of fungus Candida albicans. They may cause itching, burning and abnormal vaginal discharge which results in discomfort during urination.Having sex with a partner having a yeast infection may carry risks even if you aren’t showing symptoms. Sexual activity can extend the infection, allowing symptoms to come back. And the symptoms might be worse than they were before.
Sexual activity during yeast infection may also spread the infection from you to your partner. Having sex with a yeast infection can be painful and extremely uncomfortable. In case your labia or vulva are inflamed, you might find skin-to-skin contact to be too rough. Penetration may worsen inflamed tissue, as well as intensify itching and irritation. And when you insert anything into the vagina, whether it’s a sex toy, tongue or finger, it can bring in new bacteria. This can make your infection harsher.
How the infection transmitted?
Though it’s possible to transmit a yeast infection to your partner by sexual activity, the probability of this depends on your partner’s anatomy.
If your sexual partner is a male, they’re less likely to catch a yeast infection from you. Some people with a penis that go for unprotected sex with a partner having a vaginal yeast infection will become infected. People who have an uncircumcised penis are more possibly to be affected.
If your sexual partner is a female i.e. she has a vagina, she might be more prone to get infected.
Sex may interrupt the healing
Involving in sexual activity during a yeast infection may also interrupt your healing process. And if it intensifies your symptoms, it might take longer for you to heal.
If your partner gets a yeast infection after engaging in sexual activity with you, they may pass it back to you in your next sexual encounter. Refraining until you’ve both properly healed is the only way to stop this cycle from ongoing.
