Reasons Why You Should Vaccinate Against HPV

December 15, 2018

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus. Most cervical cancers are associated with this human papillomavirus. Generally, HPV infections don’t cause any symptoms and go away on their own. But HPV is very important as it can cause cervical cancer in women. HPV is also associated with several less common types of cancer in both men and women. It can also cause genital warts and warts in the upper respiratory tract. Widespread immunization with the HPV vaccine could lessen the impact of cervical cancer worldwide. Here's what you need to know about the HPV vaccine.

There are two major vaccines for HPV:

  • Gardasil: The vaccine is preventive for the most common HPV that are associated with both genital and anal cancer and also warts of genital and anal types.
  • Cervarix: The vaccine prevents HPV associated with cervical cancer.

HPV vaccines are recommended for girls and boys ages 11 or 12; it is also suggested to girls and women between the ages of 13 to 26 years, who have never been vaccinated against HPC before. It's best for girls and boys to get the vaccine before they have sexual contact and are exposed to the HPV virus because, if someone is infected with the virus, the vaccine might not be effective.

As various strains of HPV spread via sexual contact and are linked with most cases of cervical cancer. This vaccine may prevent the cases of cervical cancer if given before a girl or woman is sexually active or exposed to the virus. This vaccine also prevents vaginal and vulvar cancer in women and may prevent genital warts and anal cancer in both men and women.

It is said that vaccinating boys against the types of HPV associated with cervical cancer also help to protect girls from the virus because the possibility of transmission decreases. Certain types of HPV have also been linked to cancers in the mouth and throat, therefore the HPV vaccine possibly offers some protection against these types of cancers, too. The effect of HPV vaccines is quite long lasting and the vaccine is safe and efficient.
